Audience Advisory: The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace features a screen with a specially curated film for the piece that includes archival footage of war and violence including references to the Holocaust, Vietnam War, and 9/11, that may cause distress.
Karl Jenkins collaborated with film maker Hefin Owen to create the vision specifically to accompany the work, and he says: “The film echoes and traces the story as told in the text of the work; the build up to conflict, conflict itself and the aftermath, finally looking forward to a better future. Since then, the film has been seen as a backdrop to performances innumerable times all over the world; from Carnegie Hall to the Royal Festival Hall, from Johannesburg to Shanghai.”

Pushing up through smoke
From a world half darkened by overhanging cloud.

In 2025, we were delighted to acknowledge Catherine Dunn and members of the WASO Chorus for their generous support towards the commissioning of a new choral work by acclaimed Australian composer Paul Stanhope. That work, Mahāsāgar, has since gone on to receive significant recognition, with Paul Stanhope winning the 2026 Art Music Award for Work of the Year: Choral.
This is a wonderful example of how philanthropic support can have a lasting impact. The generosity of Catherine and members of the Chorus enabled WASO to commission new Australian music – music that now forms part of our artistic history and repertoire.
Commissions such as Mahāsāgar help WASO build a distinctive artistic legacy.
They give composers the opportunity to create new work, give our musicians new music to perform, and ensure that the repertoire of WASO continues to grow and evolve.
