WASO is united in opening our hearts to the people of Ukraine. We wish to express our support for their efforts to maintain their sovereign nation.

We also acknowledge Russian citizens who have courageously shown their concern at the unacceptable actions taken by their Government.

We note calls, from some, for the boycott of Russian works.

Works by Russian composers such as Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky or Shostakovich are intrinsic to the historical canon of classical music. Hundreds of pieces of enduring music were created in times of conflict. They serve as a powerful reminder of the ability of our artform to unite and rise above the unacceptable actions of a few. We will continue to perform Russian works and recognise the context of these voices as we make sense of the world in which we presently live.

We also acknowledge calls for the engagement of Russian artists to be suspended.

Russian artists with known or declared links to the Putin regime will not be engaged by WASO, however we will engage artists who stand with the world’s denunciation of the Russian invasion and decide, of their own volition, to make public declarations of condemnation of the actions of the Russian government.

WASO joins with the voices of millions gathered across the world to support Ukrainians in their defiance of this invasion. We hope that Ukraine’s independence is restored, and peace prevails.

Our home of music at Perth Concert Hall will be lit in the colours of the Ukraine flag during our performances this month.
