WASO are keenly aware that the power of music transcends the artform, and cross-discipline collaborations are a great way to see this in action.

Studies have proven that incorporating art forms such as music into STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) subjects not only increases the happiness and wellbeing of students, but also improves problem-solving skills and enhances creativity and innovation. So we couldn’t be more excited to partner with our friends at Scitech for our 2023 Classic Adventures series, to bring music and science together at Perth Concert Hall.

WASO first partnered with Scitech in 2022 to add to our pre and post-concert activities for young audiences at Leon and the Place Between. Tying in with the magical storybook theme of the concert, children were able to have their fortune told by Scitech’s two resident psychics – who were completely animatronic!

This year, Scitech will again be bringing some of their fantastic exhibits to Perth Concert Hall, but are taking it up a level.

Nature’s Symphony will see a number of Scitech’s early childhood exhibits travel to the Hall, full of interactive elements to draw children into the science of nature.

Children can see how seed dispersal for plants works in the wild on a laminar flow table, and mix and match animals to their habitat through an interactive magnet activity.

Children will also have the opportunity to be on both sides of the microscope – experimenting with microscopes to view specimens up-close, before feeling like they are under the microscope themselves in the Insect Arena; exploring a mega-size faux habitat to find the insects and flora hiding within.

Finally, Scitech’s thermal camera will show the differences in the thermal temperature of the human body, compared to some of our favourite creatures and critters.

Later in the year, Outer Space audiences will venture even further into the cosmos thanks to Scitech’s iconic ‘Blast Off’ puppets; including an astronaut, a rocket and Scruffy the space dog. These puppets will be incorporated into the concert, adding visual elements to complement the music and helping to establish the themes of the show for young music lovers.

With the integration of arts into other fields more topical than ever, we’re thrilled to be able to give our youngest audiences the opportunity to engage with music and science together.
