Elgar’s Enigma Variations was his breakthrough masterpiece, and this deeply personal musical tribute brought him international fame. Benjamin Northey opens this concert with Charles Ives’ hauntingly atmospheric The Unanswered Question before WASO’s brilliant percussion section steps into the spotlight for the world premiere of Richard Mills’ Percussion Symphony. Ethel Smyth’s stormy and cinematic On the Cliffs of Cornwall completes a program of musical secrets and revelations.
