From the centre of Perth to the furthest corners of the state, we have provided the soundtrack to life in WA since 1928.
As the State Orchestra, Perth’s first and finest, WASO is the largest employer of performing artists in Western Australia and reaches two million people with musical experiences each year on stage, in our community, and online.
From concert stages to classrooms, hospitals to aged care, we bring joy, inspire learning, and nurture participation in our community, because everybody deserves the opportunity to experience live music. We celebrate our rich classical music heritage with great artists from all over the world and commission and perform new repertoire to renew and expand it.
The Orchestra collaborates widely with major arts companies and independent artists, performing opera to ballet, movies to musicals, jazz to rock. Asher Fisch is Principal Conductor and Artistic Adviser of our Orchestra.

WASO in Schools
Our WASO in Schools program continues to play an important role in inspiring young people and expanding access to live orchestral music across Western Australia. By bringing professional musicians directly into school communities, the program creates meaningful, engaging experiences that spark curiosity, build confidence, and nurture a love of music from an early age.
WASO in Schools offers interactive, curriculum aligned incursions that allow students to experience music in a vibrant and personal way. These performances are provided free to schools in low socio economic communities, giving students a unique opportunity to encounter their State Orchestra live — often for the very first time.
During the recent season touring schools across Perth, a WASO String Quintet visited six schools, reaching an impressive 1,918 students. Each incursion was highly interactive, combining live performance with demonstrations, explanations, and opportunities for students to engage through movement, singing, and conversation. Students were invited to experience orchestral instruments up close, observe professional technique, and explore how music is created collaboratively.
The repertoire was carefully chosen to appeal to a wide range of ages and musical backgrounds. Students enjoyed classical staples such as Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik and Vivaldi’s Spring, alongside contemporary favourites including Star Wars themes and Golden from K Pop Demon Hunters. The mix of styles helped students connect orchestral music to familiar sounds while discovering something new.
Teachers highlighted the strong educational impact of the program. One commented: “It was so lovely for our kids to see such a fabulous level of playing and see in practice what they have experienced in our string program. I loved the engaging repertoire and the ‘immersive’ demo of the string techniques.”
Another reflected on the students’ enthusiasm: “The students loved singing along to Golden. They also loved the movement to In the Hall of the Mountain King. Some asked how they can get into WASO?”
Through performances like these, WASO in Schools not only enriches classroom learning but also opens pathways to future engagement with music, empowering students to see themselves as audiences, learners and potential musicians.
