From the centre of Perth to the furthest corners of the state, we have provided the soundtrack to life in WA since 1928.
As the State Orchestra, Perth’s first and finest, WASO is the largest employer of performing artists in Western Australia and reaches two million people with musical experiences each year on stage, in our community, and online.

Satu Vänskä brings her dazzling virtuosity to the His Majesty’s Theatre stage, leading music of brilliance and intensity from Baroque masters Vivaldi and Bach, alongside Tartini’s fiery Devil’s Trill Sonata and the expressive beauty of Gesualdo. Satu finishes the concert with her stunning, specially curated selection of works by the great French master, Jean-Philippe Rameau. This is Baroque music at its most vivid!

Mentoring WA's Youth Orchestras
What could be more inspiring for young musicians than seeing the West Australian Symphony Orchestra perform? Sitting beside them!
Through a dynamic partnership between WASO and the Western Australian Youth Orchestras (WAYO), emerging musicians are offered a rare opportunity to learn directly alongside professional players. This collaboration provides mentorship through a series of rehearsals and workshops, offering WAYO musicians first-hand insight into orchestral performance at the highest level.
In the lead-up to WAYO’s seasonal concerts, WASO musicians work closely with youth ensembles, sharing their expertise on ensemble cohesion, interpretation, and technique. From navigating complex passages to refining sound and musical expression, these sessions provide practical guidance grounded in professional experience. Just as importantly, they deepen young musicians’ understanding of the discipline, collaboration, and artistry required within a professional orchestra.
Since March, WASO has supported WAYO through workshops on Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.6, Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, and John Adams’ The Chairman Dances: Foxtrot for Orchestra. The collaboration extends beyond the senior orchestra to include WAYO’s junior ensembles – Philharmonic, Collegium String Orchestra, Camerata String Orchestra and Sinfonietta String Orchestra – ensuring musicians at every stage benefit from this shared learning experience.
For WAYO’s junior string ensembles, the impact can be significant. At these formative stages, direct interaction with WASO string players helps build strong technical foundations, from bow control and intonation to ensemble listening and blend.
The partnership continues throughout the second half of 2026, with WASO supporting rehearsals, workshops and concert preparation, while nurturing the next generation of orchestral musicians in Western Australia.

Music has the power to transform a child’s life
Crescendo, the only program of its kind in Western Australia, provides students at two schools facing socio-educational disadvantage with the opportunity to learn music with weekly musicianship classes, learn violin or cello, sing in a choir, and experience the joy of music through workshops, excursions and performances led by WASO teaching artists. One of the most important elements of Crescendo is how every child receives a musicianship class.
Through music, students develop valuable lifelong skills including teamwork, discipline, patience, and perseverance. The program empowers children to build confidence, foster creativity and strengthen their connection to their school and community.
Students from North Parmelia Primary School and Medina Primary School are given the opportunity to develop these skills while participating in meaningful musical experiences and performances. This year, all students in Years 5 and 6 are participating in One Big Voice, Australia’s largest and most inclusive children’s choir, with four students in the program also selected as soloists or have compere parts— a testament to their dedication and growth.
