Meet tutti violin, Andrea Mendham

What is your first musical memory?

My first musical memory is playing violin trios with my older sisters. I was only little and not formally learning yet, but I remember wanting to be just like Bec (WASO violinist Rebecca Glorie) and Deb so got out my tiny violin and stood on stage with them.

Have you always wanted to be a musician?

Since I can remember, I have always wanted to be involved with music and in particular, play the violin in a chamber and orchestral setting. Growing up, I watched my sisters perform and regularly attended WASO concerts. Mr Wood was an inspiring teacher who helped develop the love of music that I have now.

Aside from being a musician, when I was in Kindergarten, I wanted to be a bride and would wear the wedding dress in the costume corner every day!

You have taught classroom music at various schools around Perth; what do you enjoy about teaching in a classroom setting?

I really enjoy creating connections with students of all ages through the joy of music. Whether we are singing, learning theory or composing, it is really exciting to see what the students can achieve both with and without an instrument. Experiencing music in all forms helps children develop understanding and hopefully the same love of music that I have.

What’s the most played non-classical track on your phone?

At the moment, my sons are enjoying heavy metal and heavy rock so anything Metallica and Nirvana seems to be winning when we are in the car together!

I really love…

To decorate cakes! It is a different kind of creative outlet which I find quite relaxing. I quite like the challenge of creating a specific cake a friend has asked for. Plus, my family enjoy eating all the leftover cake!
