One of our most enduring and successful programs, the Composition Project provides young and emerging Western Australian composers with the opportunity to develop their skills in a professional orchestral environment. Through a series of individual lessons, workshops and rehearsals, participants compose a new work for 14-piece chamber ensemble, performed by WASO musicians in front of a live audience. Participants are mentored both by James Ledger (Artistic Director) and WASO musicians.
This project has helped previous participants successfully gain placement in national and international composition programs, post-graduate studies and secure professional commissions and residencies.
This year the project gives emerging composers the opportunity to write a short solo work for a WASO musician. Sessions have been delivered digitally and allowed West Australian composers to develop their skills in a professional orchestral environment. Artistic Director and mentor James Ledger is guiding our composers through a series of online workshops culminating in a final performance and recording session on stage at Perth Concert Hall.
