Australian Conducting Academy

As a founding partner of the Australian Conducting Academy, WASO plays a vital role in Australia's premier conductor development program. In partnership with the nation's leading orchestras, the Academy provides emerging conductors from Australia and New Zealand with intensive training, expert mentorship and substantial podium experience. Led by renowned conductor Benjamin Northey and supported by distinguished mentors including WASO's Principal Conductor Asher Fisch, the program equips participants with the artistic and professional skills required to build successful conducting careers.

Assistant Conductors

WASO's Assistant Conductor program offers emerging conductors a year-round opportunity to gain first-hand experience within a professional symphony orchestra. Working alongside Principal Conductor Asher Fisch and international guest conductors, Assistant Conductors are immersed in every aspect of orchestral preparation, from score study and rehearsal planning to conducting during rehearsals. In 2026/2027 WASO is supporting two local conductors John Keene and Sara Duhig, offering invaluable insight into artistic leadership, rehearsal technique and orchestra management, while also gaining the essential podium experience needed to advance to the next stage of their careers.

Associate Conductor

The Associate Conductor role represents a significant professional development opportunity for outstanding conducting talent. As Associate Conductor, Jen Winley works across a wide range of WASO performances and programs, from mainstage concerts and recordings to education initiatives, community engagement projects and special collaborations. The position provides meaningful artistic leadership opportunities while contributing to the development of audiences, musicians and future conductors, creating a vital bridge between emerging talent and a sustainable professional conducting career.
