Originally from Christchurch, New Zealand, Jane moved to Perth in 2006 to take up the Principal Bassoon position with WASO. Prior to this she was Principal Bassoon with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra from 2003-2006. She has also performed with the Melbourne, Queensland and New Zealand Symphony Orchestras. Jane has appeared as a soloist with WASO twice, performing Vivaldi’s Concerto in E Minor in 2011, and Haydn’s Sinfonia Concertante in 2009.
As a chamber musician, Jane performs with a variety of ensembles including the Arundo Reed Quintet, with whom she has recorded for ABC Classic FM. She is also active as a teacher in Perth and teaches bassoon at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and at the University of Western Australia. Jane completed her undergraduate studies at Victoria University of Wellington. After receiving several prestigious scholarships she continued her studies at the Manhattan School of Music in New York and graduated with a Master of Music in Orchestral Performance. Her teachers there included Whitney Crockett, Frank Morelli and Patricia Rogers.
Outside of music Jane enjoys creating things that are delicious or beautiful (or preferably both, as is the case with baking). She is finishing renovating her house and landscaping the garden, and is enjoying (and struggling) to do both in an eco-friendly way. She also tries to fit in an annual pilgrimage to the snow for some skiing, and to remind her of her (cold) NZ roots.
