Double Bass

Robin Brawley

Double Bass

Robin joined WASO in 2023.

Robin Brawley is an Australian double bassist whose career spans major symphony orchestras, international training institutions, chamber music performance, and arts leadership. He is currently a member of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra and appeared as Guest Principal Double Bass with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.

A graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music and chamber musician, Robin has toured internationally with Curtis On Tour in 2024 and 2026, and in 2025 was featured in WASO’s Chamber Music Series, presenting the Australian premiere of Edgar Meyer’s 1995 Quintet. His artistic profile combines orchestral excellence with chamber music versatility and international performance experience.

Originally from Sydney, Robin began his studies with his father, Neil Brawley. He later completed a Bachelor of Music Studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, studying with Alex Henery and Maxime Bibeau.

In 2010, Robin won a tenured position with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, where he performed for five years before relocating to the United States for further study. At Curtis, he completed a Post Baccalaureate Diploma with a 4.0 GPA under the tutelage of Hal Robinson and Edgar Meyer.

During his time in the United States, Robin was twice awarded full-tuition fellowships to the Aspen Music Festival and School, where he also served as a mentor in the Center for Orchestral Leadership program.

Robin’s commitment to education has continued in Australia through private teaching, relief instruction with Instrumental Music School Services, and leading masterclasses at the University of Western Australia. He has worked with students across secondary, tertiary, and pre-professional levels, with a focus on technical development, audition preparation, orchestral repertoire, and sustainable professional practice.

Following his return to Australia in 2018, Robin broadened his leadership experience through service as an Officer in the Royal Australian Navy, training as a Maritime Warfare Officer, before returning full-time to the orchestral profession in 2023 with WASO. This combination of artistic achievement, discipline, and leadership informs his approach as both a performer and educator.

Robin performs on a Venetian double bass by Domenico Busan, circa 1766, formerly played by his father.
