Education

Do you remember that special moment when you were young and heard a symphony orchestra live for the first time? That sense of wonder and excitement where your aural and visual senses were working overtime trying to comprehend this collective group of instruments. Where does one look? Where did that sound come from? And wouldn’t it be so grand if you could hit that big, bass drum.

This cherished lifetime memory is what we at the West Australian Symphony Orchestra want to bring to your students in 2013. And what better venue than the Perth Concert Hall, voted the best acoustic in Australia.

For our primary audiences, 2013 is the year of the wolf! We celebrate this sublime creature with Prokofiev’s popular Peter and the Wolf, a work which has introduced the instruments of the orchestra to generations of concert goers. As an added stimulus, Prokofiev’s magical score will accompany the Academy Award®-winning animated film of the same name.

The wicked humour of Roald Dahl’s Little Red Riding Hood has been skilfully adapted by the English composer Paul Patterson. Add to this production three actors and a collection of puppets and we have a show to spark the imagination of the young.

For our secondary students we have a diversity of orchestral programs, large and small, with the popular WACE Designated Works Concert heralding the new academic year. These tickets are in demand, as are our accompanying resource notes, so I advise you to book early.

2013 offers such a diversity of orchestral programs to all students in this vast state of Western Australia. We want to share the joy of music making with you, whether you reside in the metropolitan area or live in a remote region, our musicians will come to you, either in person or via the web. Touring continues to be an essential part of our Education and Community Program.

We have selected the very best international artists, conductors and guest educators to inspire your students and to embrace that ‘wow’ factor of live music.

Together let’s ignite that special moment live classical music can spark in a child – one which will stay with them for a lifetime.
